Rigging for bird wings in a full-length animated feature, focusing on highly detailed feather behaviour, animator-friendly controls, and flexible performance across extreme angles and close-up shots.
THE BAD CAT
Sed tempor iaculis massa faucibus feugiat. In fermentum facilisis massa
The Bad Cat (Kötü Kedi Şerafettin) is a full-length animated feature film centred around one of the most beloved and iconic characters in Turkish comic. Being part of this project was personally very meaningful to me, and I am genuinely proud to have contributed to bringing Şerafettin to the big screen.
My role focused on the design and implementation of advanced bird wing rigs in Autodesk Maya. Although a specialised task, the work was highly complex, requiring the wings to function both as expressive wings and as arm-and-hand equivalents for character acting. The rigs needed to hold up across extreme angles and close-up shots while remaining flexible and intuitive for animators.
A key challenge was managing feather behaviour during folding, extension, and performance-driven motion. Each feather was carefully curated to avoid intersections and visual artefacts, even during dense animation. I also implemented detailed, animator-friendly controls and dynamic features, giving animators fine-grained control while maintaining visual fidelity and performance.
